Two Capacitor Paradox

I'm trying to learn about electricity but that article leaves me a bit confused.

> Two identical capacitors are connected in parallel

it says, and goes on to show a picture that shows an open circuit with two capacitors connected in series, not parallel. If they were parallel, there'd be some kind of junction in between, or not? From the picture alone, how would one tell whether they're in parallel or in series?
